Start time 6:00pm - 8:30pm
This 5 week workshop is a great way to learn a few different handbuilding skills as well as an introduction to glazing. This is perfect for beginners or those that have dabbled a little and want to refine their skills. You will learn about different clays used at Meraki, the best stages for working with clay, using sprigs, underglaze transfers, painting with underglaze etc. You will also learn how to glaze your items as well as how to finish them on the final night.
We will cover working with slabs mostly but we will cover pinch pots and coiling on the first night as well.
The workshop will run over 5 week nights from Wednesday April 22nd 2026
Week 1 - 22nd April 2026
Introduction - this week will be all about getting to know your clay, the different stages of working with clay, rolling it out, joining etc. We will make some small items where you can either stamp, use rollers etc.
We will also cover workshop safety.
Week 2 - 29th April 2026 - something round
Make something round - this week you will learn how to make something with a round shape that involves bending your slab of clay to shape. Could be a mug or small vase.
Week 3 - 6th May 2026 - something with flat sides or coils
This week you can add onto what you made last week using coils or make a small tea light house/lidded box using flat sides.
Week 4 - 20th May 2026
This workshop will be two weeks after Week 3 so I can bisque fire your pieces ready for glazing.
Tonight is glaze night where you will learn about the glazes I use in the workshop and glaze your pieces.
Week 5 - 27th May 2026
This week we will finish your pieces (sand bottoms etc). Meraki will provide a light supper and we can check out everyone's finished pieces. You will also receive a handout with a basic run down of the techniques we covered, my fav suppliers etc
Price includes all materials and tools needed, firing all your items as well as glaze etc.
This is a small class with a maximum of 6 people.
Available for ages 15 plus
For this course if you miss a week there will be no make up days available since I only run this workshop twice a year.
Please wear clothes you don't mind getting grubby, there are aprons available. It is advisable to have reasonably short nails when working with clay. If you do have nails we can work around it but you might find that you need to clean up the clay a bit more (even small nails will leave marks as we make the items).
Refreshment will be provided but feel free to BYO if you would like a wee dabble during the class.
Please also be aware that due to the nature of pottery and firing x 2 means that sometimes things don't work out as they should. I dry mugs etc super slowly but sometimes cracks etc still form. It happens, it still happens to me and any potter you talk too will say the same. I will do my utmost best and handle all your mugs with care but please be aware due to the nature of the craft there may be a breakage. I really hope not, but sometimes it just happens.
